In â€Å"Miss Brill† Katherine Mansfield, depicts a lonely older female, whom is psychologically separated from reality, and who used her extensive fantasies as a way to protect herself from her reality. In Eudora Welty’s â€Å"A Worn Path†, also depicts an older female who is not lonely, and also has a form of psychological problems, due to her forgetfulness form her old age. The protagonist in each story, share similarities and discrepancies such as: life circumstances, personalities, and habits. Miss Brill and Phoenix Jackson share both similarities and discrepancies in their life circumstances. Miss Brill is an educated, older, isolated, Caucasian female in France with an extensive imagination. She volunteers four times a week to read to an older gentleman, which she refers to as ‘invalid’. In Miss Brill’s pastime she travels every Sunday to the Jardins Publiques, to listen to the band play and eavesdrop on other people’s conversations. She fantasizes she is a leading actress in a play to protect herself from feeling no one cares about her. Phoenix Jackson is an uneducated, older African American female in Mississippi, who is alone in her journey but isn’t alone on a regular basis. Jackson is possibly unbalanced due to her advanced age, Jackson is constantly reminded of her age throughout the story with several people referring to her as ‘granny’ and ‘grandma’.
